Trucking

Building partnerships between GroupHEALTH Benefit Solutions, Blewett & Associates and the trucking industry.

As is the standard for all exceptional partnerships, it must be mutually beneficial for both parties. Blewett & Associates in conjunction with GroupHEALTH are dedicated to the meeting the needs of members of the trucking industry associations that they jointly created an exclusive product, AdvantagePLUS™.

The creation of Canada’s original Mid-term Disability™ was a direct result of the expressed unease with the ever increasing costs of long-term disability. Through a collaborative effort between our insurers, key employers and Advisor Partner, this unique cost-effective GroupHEALTH product was precisely the solution needed to address member concerns. As a result, companies in the trucking industry have saved hundreds of thousand of dollars collectively. Additionally, companies have been combining AdvantagePlus™ with a Managed Rx program, which is directly correlating into added savings due to overall lower prescription medication costs.

Our recognized success is a testament to the value we hold in preserving our partnerships, particularly where maintaining feasible employee benefit programs are concerned.  When it comes to our clients within the trucking association – we deliver for those who ‘deliver’!

Selecting Benefits That Benefit Trucking Companies

Establishing a benefits program is important to members of the trucking industry for multitude of reasons. Due to a combination of lifestyle and working conditions, a large quantity of the truck driving population are faced with an increasing number of health problems; such as, obesity, smoking and sleep apnea. Obesity has been directly related to an increased risk of bodily harm during an accident, as many overweight drivers do not where their seatbelt due to its constricting nature. Maintaining the health of current drivers, and creating attractive benefit plans to entice new drivers is becoming an increasing concern for the Canadian trucking industry, as there is forecasted to be a shortage of 33,000 drivers by 2020.

Protecting current employees and prospecting new drivers through an attractive benefits plan is often a troublesome and complex process. To be successful in this endeavour you need to find the balance between comprehensive, cost-effective coverage that provides value through the long term. Some key factor to consider throughout the decision making process include:

  • Trust: As you work through the next points you will discover the highest ranking factor in deciding on an insurance provider, can you establish a trusting partnership?
  • Controlling Costs: Have you chosen a plan that will curb ever-increasing costs?
  • Value Protection: Is this a sustainable plan? Without forfeiting coverage options, can we minimize renewal fees that will help to stifle cost increases?
  • Claims Service: What is the claims payment process like? Will the experience be made pain-free through high quality customer service standards?
  • Customization/Innovation: Does the plan provider you’re researching provide leading-edge programs and products that will contain costs, while maintaining value?
  • Openness: Does your insurance provide operate with transparent principles, ensuring you can make knowledgeable decisions through knowing exactly how premiums and costs are calculated?

The most prominent issue facing members of the trucking industry is curtailing the increasing costs of long term disability, which is why Canada’s original Mid-term Disability™ (MTD) was created.

Lets talk coverage periods! MTD has been successful in saving trucking companies money, due to the fact that it covers the period in between short-term disability (STD) and long-term disabilty (LTD) coverage. After sick leave ends, STD coverage commences, usually lasting a duration of 15-26 weeks. However, LTD coverage initiates when EI or STD coverage ceases, ending after two years unless you are unable to perform any occupational duties. Traditional LTD coverage can have rates of up to 40% of the premium cost.

Here’s where MTD has proven its benefits! MTD will commence after STD coverage is terminated and will proceed to cover you up for up to a maximum period of two years (that’s where LTD would kick in). MTD results in a saving of up to 10-15% the cost of traditional LTD coverage, and due to the fact that one third of cases qualify for LTD, midsize companies will see significant savings.

MTD is only available to companies with 200 or more employees. Combine that with a Managed Rx service and many companies see impactful savings through lower overall costs in both prescription drugs and premium increases. GlobalHEALTH prides itself in working to keep costs low for its members and associations.

Due to the fact that GroupHEALTH has aptness to the trucking industry, the AdvantagePLUS™ plans were created to address the unique concerns of the associations and its members. Plan benefits include: customizable plan options, benefit enhancements, competitive rates, easy online administration access, and next generation Accident and Serious Illness benefits (ASI).

Services also included access to Employee and Family Assistance Programs (EFAP), second opinion medical services, and DMI’s disability management services. These value added services provide employees and their families the necessary support and resources to persevere through difficult situations. AdvantagePLUS™, in conjunction with MTD and Managed Rx, is ready to make the long haul with you!
